Why European Pine?

European pine generally has a tighter grain, fewer knots and a more consistent texture than standard South African pine, making it better suited to handcrafted wooden furniture. Its slower growth creates a denser, more stable wood that responds beautifully to carving, staining and ageing techniques — which is why it forms the foundation of every Old Cottage^TM piece.

While many mass-produced pine furniture ranges rely on softer, fast-growing timber, Old Cottage^TM uses carefully selected European pine for our range of genuine wood furniture. The result is solid wood furniture that feels more substantial, ages more gracefully and brings warmth, character and timeless style into your home.

The natural grain patterns of European pine also allow our trademarked finishes and hand-carved details to stand out beautifully, giving each piece depth and individuality. It is one of the key reasons an Old Cottage^TM piece feels noticeably different the moment you see it in person.

Every Old Cottage^TM piece is handcrafted on order by our artisans, allowing us to create genuine wood furniture with the care and attention it deserves. Because our solid wood furniture is made to order rather than mass produced, delivery typically takes between 21–28 working days. The result is timeless South African furniture made specifically for your home.

Our colours are also hand-mixed in small batches as orders are placed. This artisanal process gives every Old Cottage^TM piece its rich, authentic character, while ensuring no two items feel completely factory-made. Because each batch is mixed individually, slight tonal variations can occur between production runs. If you are furnishing an entire room or ordering matching wooden furniture pieces, we recommend placing your order together to ensure the closest possible colour consistency across your range.
